Fawn Bench
The legs are made using a process of steam bending, before being shaped with a spokeshave and scraper and blackened using the Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban, a traditional method of wood preservation achieved through scorching the surface of the wood. The main body of the piece is carved from quarter sawn Ash and finished to a smooth surface to contrast the legs. The seat is Goatskin.
Inspiration for this piece was led by process, namely the steam bending of the legs. I wanted to achieve a strong and continuous form to support the body. Our local sheep, stood amongst the mud, winter grazing in the fields, was my source of inspiration for the finish used on the legs.
